MPlayer OSX Extended vs MPlayer OX Version 1.0 rc2

Added by Rodrigo Martinez 12 months ago

Hi All,

Still hanging on to my Powerbook G4 Titanium 1.0GHz after nearly 10 years!

Upgraded to Leopard 10.5.8, running TenFourFox 4.0.2, upgraded to blu-ray and even added an SSD.

Thought my computer was outdated until I ran across MPLayer OSX 1.0 rc2 which allows me to play 720p video which makes most of the current netbooks choke.

All I am missing is a way to make MPlayer OSX Extended work like 1.0 rc2. I can't find the option to activate Altivec, and videos are noticeably slower as well... :-(

Perhaps I am missing something, or perhaps I need a custom binary for PPC 7450?

Please help!

Thank you!

Can you post the link where you downloaded 1.0 rc2 from? I only find the version 2.0 links for MPlayer OSX. I can probably find it with a bit more searching, but just to be sure we've got the same version...

http://www.haque.net/software/mplayer/mplayerosx/builds/

Look for:

MPlayer-dev-latest.dmg

There's also a 1.0 rc1 which seems even a bit faster, but doesn't play FLV

I want Mplayer OSX Extended but with full support of Altivec so I can use it to watch 720p video.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

This is one of the old MPlayer builds that offered a selection of video output modules. Which one works best for you? So far I have just tested this build on an Intel machine (core2duo) where only Quartz and CoreVideo work, but I'll break out my old G5 and perhaps the 500MHz G4 (I knew there was a reason for keeping it around :p) and try using those computers as well.

It would be helpful if you could report both playback quality with each output module, as well as CPU usage (there are 3 mplayer processes, just report the most CPU intensive one from Activity Monitor – filter the results by 'mplayer' and sort by descending % CPU), using the same video for each test.

MPlayer performance is one of my top priorities, and I believe the slowdown you are experiencing with the newer versions (MPlayer Extended) is due to use of the CoreVideo output, which I have found to be 30-50% slower than OpenGL output (which isn't enabled in MPE without recompiling).

I'd also like to know what graphics card you have. I have a theory that perhaps mplayer does better on certain cards, but I don't have enough data to justify the conclusion yet.

Playing the first minute of Cars 2 Trailer downloaded from Youtube in 720p MP4

in MPlayer OSX 1.0 rc1:

I get 1006 dropped frames and aprox. 115% CPU Usage

in MPlayer OSX 1.0 rc2:

I get 1043 dropped frames and aprox. 130% CPU Usage

in MPlayer OSX Extended rev 14:

I get 1254 droped frames and aprox. 4000% Total CPU Usage and the video get's stuck on the first couple of frames as the audio goes on. rc1 and rc2 are pretty much usable and allow me to proudly say that my ~10 year old computer is playing back 720p video and many netbooks aren't. ;-)

What I would really like is to say the same thing but using MPlayer OSX Extended with it's additional features/updates.

In rc1 I use Video Out module set to CoreVideo(Beta)

and

in rc2 I used Video Out module set to Quartz/Quicktime.

Both rc1 and rc2 have Enable Altivec set in the Miscellaneous section but can't find this option in MPlayer OSX Extended.

Keep up the good work guys!

Thanks!

Help! I need an need to supercharge my MPlayer OSX Extended with AltiVec speed boost (or whatever is making rc1/rc2 faster)!!

:-)

RE: MPlayer OSX Extended vs MPlayer OX Version 1.0 rc2 - Added by Rodrigo Martinez 12 months ago

Come on guys!

I'm not willing to give in on my 1Ghz 1Gb RAM Powerbook G4 so soon, after all it has it's merits:

http://www.idsa.org/content/content1/titanium-powerbook-g4

I'd happily make a donation via PayPal to someone that could compile me a custom version of MPlayer OSX Extended that would run just like rc1/rc2 used to.

In fact I'd do the same if someone helped me out with a custom ffmpeg binary that also uses Altivec to speed things (iffmpeg) up, if such a thing is possible.

Cheers!
