external 5.1 audio card

Added by George kaliviotis about 2 years ago

Greetings to all
I have a G5 quad with an external soundblaster 5.1 usb that now days I use it as a home theater player, for the past 2 months I try to enable the card to output 5.1 with no success.
From quicktime via Perian, 5.1 on the card is playing fine but I don't know what to do with mplayer extended, Perian on ppc can't play 1080p mkv's without drops in framerate. and I found out that mplayer extended can handle 1080p perfect on my quad, even when I open 2 instances and run 2x 1080p mkv its playing perfect!!
but without 5.1 audio is a bit of disappointment for me...
anyone knows how to enable mplayer to output 5.1 via usb card? (I have already setup audio-midi settings for 6 channels 48k for the soundblaster)
Thanks for that almost perfect proggy that gives more life to PPC machines!

EDIT:
I've found that VLC is playing fine 5.1 DTS or AC3 channels through this card, only mplayer extended and XBMC are having problems, but both Perian and VLC are choppy when playing 1080p mkv files :(

I have the same problem with AC3/DTS as well as 6 Channel AAC audio with Griffin Firewave. VLC works fine, only MPlayer gives me problems. Additionally, when enabling -channels 6 on command line everything is mapped incorrectly, and it seems impossible to get the rear-right channel working at all.

Any help or suggestion would be appreciated.
Thanks!

@George: try 64-bit VLC for your 1080p MKVs (find it in the nightly builds).

I have exactly the same problem with Creative X-Fi Surround 5.1.
