fontconfig

Added by d bond about 2 years ago

Since updating to rev13-test7 (1307) opening the application always wants to update the fontconfig. Not just on first launch - every launch - effectively rendering it unusable for 2min each time I open it.

Did you try trashing your fontconfig cache?

It's a hidden folder inside your home folder:
  • Press Command-Shift-H in Finder to go to your home folder.
  • Press Command-Shift-G to open the go to sheet.
  • Enter ".fontconfig" (should autocomplete with tab) and click Open.
  • Delete all the cache files in the folder that opens.

Hi Adrian, thanks for your suggestion.
Unfortunately that didn't work.
I've tried flushing the fontconfig folder and restarting (both Mplayer and my comp) a few times but to no avail.
Today I updated to test8 and it's the same.
Also, each time Mplayer rebuilds the fontconfig (the fontconfig popup menu disappears) I stil have to wait another 30sec-2min before playback actually begins. The wait time seems to be related to the size of the video file.

Incidentally I am using Path Finder (latest build) and do not have Finder running, although I can confirm I still have the problem when both are running together, and also when only Finder is running.

Thanks for your help.

fontconfig became corrupted and would crash mposxe on start with no notice, deleting the directory fixed it but perhaps that should be integrated self-fixing behavior?

Registered to say that I have the same issue as the original poster. Every time I fire up Mplayer, it has to update the fontconfig and takes a few minutes. Likewise, once that's complete, it takes an additional 2-3 minutes for the movie to actually start playing.

Once it starts, it's great. mkv files, even at 1080p look fantastic. But hoping the issue of always loading fontconfig and delay in startup might be looked at/resolved.

I'm running rev13 (13310) on OS X 10.6.

If there's any additional info that I can provide, please let me know.

Thanks!
Charlie

Also wanted to mention I tried deleting the .fontcache files as per your instructions, Adrian. No effect. There's apparently some common element between bond's machine/config and mine :\

Thanks!
Charlie

rev13, 10.6.4

Font caching happens once every reboot.

Is there a resolution/workaround for this issue?

Same problem here.

Could this have to do with using FileVault? I use FileVault on all my machines.

RE: fontconfig - Added by Ebon Weaver over 1 year ago

Adding a me too on this. Worked fine under 10.5, but under 10.6 every time the app opens, regardless of what you are doing with it (I only play MP3 files, not videos) fontconfig spends a solid 2 minutes updating. I'm not using filevault as one poster questioned. This seems a clear issue with fontconfig not working right in 10.6, it's not actually building a lasting cache. I hope this gets fixed, this is the best music player I have found for Mac, but this load time is killer.

RE: fontconfig - Added by Henry Pagliero over 1 year ago

I currently have two Macs (both Intel chip one is MacBook Pro and the other a Mac Mini) and both operate exactly the same Mac OSX and also MPlayerOSX Extended versions. On the MacBook I have the above instance of the problem loading. On the Mini it does not occur so I don't think it is actually a system incompatibility per se. One important point to note is the Mini acts solely as an HTPC and has only the core base OSX fonts installed. The MacBook however is my normal 'workstation' and as a result has many fonts installed on top of the base system fonts. I raise the question that it may be some of these 'non-standard' fonts that have caused the loading problems.

I was wondering if anyone using a font loader such as Suitcase (or equivalent) can get round the issue by disabling fonts not required when using MPlayer? If this is the case it may be one or two rogue, possibly corrupt, fonts that are causing the problem. Therefore my suggestion is to only have core base fonts loaded in the system permanently and launch the extra fonts for other purposes only when required... as after all you won't be word-processing or editing page layouts when watching a movie!

If anyone has tried this and found this to be true I would really appreciate feedback as it may be worth my while in investing in something like suitcase to get round the problem as it really is a pain in the neck.

Thanks for listening.

Still no solution to this one, huh? Well I am having the same problem with rev 14 test 4. I have done a little experimenting so maybe I can shed some light on the problem.
I installed the program and went into the pref window before I played anything. One of the settings i changed was the font. It is blank to start with but once you set it you can't go back to leaving the field blank. I set it to times new roman with semi-bold style. Now I get the fontconfig load every time I start the program and after that it will not play anything- just a green screen. Also, when i go to the font and styling section in pref semi-bold is no longer an option under times new roman. Seems like in might be corrupt?

So I created a new user on the same computer, opened up mplayer, and changed all the settings I did before, but left the font/style section blank. Works perfect. Now if I could delete mplayers pref files and start all over, i could fix it, but those pref files seem to be hidden and i dont know how to find them.

I tried Adrian's solution of deleting the .fontconfig cache but the finder told me there was no such file. Don't know if thats part of the problem or a change between mplayer versions.

Well, I hope I helped someone eventually. This computer is brand new so I will prob just solve the problem by creating a new user profile and not changing the mplayer font setting this time since i have so little data to lose.

RE: fontconfig - Added by Sean Lies about 1 year ago

Update- I was wrong, the pref files are not hidden, they just don't show up in spotlight searches. I went through the library in my user profile (not the one in the hard drive!) and trashed everything with mplayer in the name- it was a folder, 3 .plists, and a .log. Then I restarted mplayer and now it plays and there is no fontconfig load every time I start the program.

Hopefully someone benefits from my frustrating morning figuring this out!
