Description
There are a growing number of .mkv files that are utilizing ordered chapters. At the moment, it seems that only Windows users using the Haali Media Splitter are able to properly play files that use Ordered Chapters in the correct "order". This leaves Mac/Linux users out of the loop, as current versions of MPlayer OSX Extended (and even VLC) are unable to play such files.
I see that MPlayer OSX Extended already supports chapters. However, what if I want a specific chapter to play at a specific time, and then resume from where the previous chapter left off? An example would be when there is the main file (700MB) that includes the prologue and main story only. After the prologue, cue the OP sequence located in a separate file (70MB). Then return to the main file continuing where it left off. Then after that, cue the ED sequence located in another separate file (70MB).
The main point of using this technique is to avoid having to repeatedly download the OP/ED that are normally included in "whole files". That way users can save on bandwidth and hard disk space, without having to sacrifice on quality.
As more and more files start to implement Ordered Chapters, Mac and Linux users alike are left behind in frustration having to manually open different files, skip through, continue, etc.

Some users have released patches so that MPlayer can play 'MKV Ordered Chapters' on Linux and Windows.
With their consent, similar patches can be added to MPlayer OSX Extended.
I hope these helps:

Hey adrain, check my post here, I managed to compile mplayer with ordered chapters. It is not even hard by using the git development repository instead of the distribution svn.
Overall it is works pretty well, the only problem is the maximum time on the timeline (the one used for seeking in the gui) remains the one of the main file. No big deal for me tho :)
I don't know about stability, it is from the dev repository after all. Works well on my system but it might cause problems on other ones.

I want to stay as close to the official repository as possible. Currently, building two separate ffmpeg trees (regular & mt) for two architectures (ppc & i386) is already more complex than I like. With x86_64 and the unofficial mplayer branch the complexity would more than double.
I'll probably take a look at the git branch but before support for ordered chapters is not in the official source I don't see much chance that I would make a special build.
What I've been thinking about, however, is a system to make using different mplayer builds in Extended. This could incorporate the existing two builds (regular/mt ffmpeg) and allow easy loading/switching of third-party builds. This way, someone else could maintain a ordered-chapters build that users could install if they want support for that.

There certainly is a lot to discuss relevant to such an important topic, most defniitely as http://onlinemeetingnews.com online meetings might be used for significant change within the discipline.
